Welcome to Alton

Lake living in an expanding city.

You will find Alton, New Hampshire, at the southern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee and sitting below Wolfeboro, the oldest resort town in the U.S. With lake life prominent, this is a typical tourist destination during the summer season. You will see many lakeside houses, expansive lots, and modest homes closer to the center of town.

What to Love

  • Surrounded by lakes and nature
  • Local restaurants offering crowd favorites
  • Proximity to Wolfeboro and Gilford, N.H.

Local Lifestyle

The locals of Alton love lake life. Visiting the beach, hiking near the lake to enjoy the picturesque views, and getting out on the water are all common pastimes. Alton Bay, at the southern extremity of Lake Winnipesaukee, functions as a port for Mount Washington Cruises, which sail north to docks in Wolfeboro and beyond. There are also restaurants and shops to explore. With such proximity to the nearby towns of Wolfeboro and Gilford, there is even more to check out when looking for alternatives.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Some local restaurants provide crowd-favorite foods, such as Alton Village Pizza. They're especially liked for their subs and calzones. Fans of the place love the specialty pizza options such as alfredo, tropical chicken, and ranchero. They also serve a variety of salads, burgers, wraps, pasta, and gyros.

Ackerly's Grill & Galley Restaurant is a top seafood spot in town. They're open for lunch and dinner, Wednesday through Sunday. Lobster mac and cheese, seafood alfredo, seared salmon, fish tacos, and stuffed haddock are just a few choices. They also have steak selections and chicken dishes for those who prefer it.

Shibley's at the Pier offers views of the water. Whether you're dining outdoors or sitting on the deck, you can see the expansive lake. Enjoy the view while you feast on jumbo lobster rangoons, coconut shrimp, Polynesian meatballs, seafood risotto, fried calamari, bourbon beef tips, or cashew-crusted pork. This is another beloved seafood and American cuisine establishment.

Though many prefer to go to Tilton to shop at the Tanger Outlets or Wolfeboro for their shopping center, the Alton Country Store is a top spot for gifts and unique finds. They have various products, including clothing, home decor, jewelry, outdoor and lake decor, and locally-made foods.

Things to Do

Mt Major is one of the most well-rated hiking trails around. Make your way to the top to experience some of the most breathtaking views of the land and lake. Numerous spots exist like this in Alton, with the Quarry Mountain Forest and Alton Town Forest both picturesque places to explore. You can also sail Lake Winnipesaukee with Mount Washington Cruises, which launched its first ship from Alton Bay in 1872.

Throughout the fall season, you can enjoy the Spectacular Scarecrow Spree. Residents can purchase a scarecrow to decorate and adorn in their front yard for all to enjoy. Prizes are awarded for the best designs.

Each winter, residents make the short drive north to Gunstock Mountain Resort in nearby Gilford. A local fixture since 1937, Gunstock transforms with its first snowfall into ski country. Besides alpine and cross-country skiing, you can go snow tubing, snowshoeing, and hiking (there is also ziplining and swimming during the summer).

You can also explore the Gilman Museum if you're a history buff or simply want to experience what the city was like many years ago. One of the prominent features is the case clock from 1703, while there are many other exhibit pieces from the 1800 and 1900s.
